Hatches and Catches
Small Gold Stones, Caddis, BWO's, and a few Green Drakes are
fluttering in the early autumn air at Boxwood Gulch. The Grasshoppers are
trying to find a place to relocate with the hay baling, and are finding that
the river is NOT the best place to land. Bows and Browns are searching the
banks for these juicy morsels, and crush them as soon as they hit the water.
Attractors like Wulffs, Humpy's, and Stimulators are great afternoon
patterns, while the really BIG BOYS are still preferring a more natural
offering like Caddis and Baetis.
The streamer fishing is starting to heat up in the evening as the sun begins
it's decent on Shawnee Ridge.
Sept 3rd.- Marisa Peede took a 24" 6lb. Bow on a Zonker in Cleofus' hole as
soon as the evening shade dimmed the light on this famed trophy water. The
battle ensued for almost 10 minutes as this MONSTER Bow tried every way to
keep from being photographed. Photos will be on the next report.
Marisa's father , Dr. Butch Peede, tried to top his daughters trout by
skating a mouse pattern at dusk. Butch rolled a dozen fish in about 30
minutes but none that could rival his daughters Bow.
With the river running at 85 C.F.S. dry fly fishing from morning until dusk
has been the norm with anglers averaging 25 fish each.
September and October promise to produce even greater catches as the water
temp. drops and the trout start beefing up for winter.
I hope to see you in the deer camp for a campfire breakfast.
See you soon!
